What long studies look at
Longer studies track how the body's metabolic markers (things like blood sugar and weight in study subjects) shift over many weeks or months. They also look at what happens to those markers when a compound is kept up or stopped. In a published trial called SURPASS-1, a peptide named tirzepatide (which acts on two receptors at once, GIP and GLP-1) was studied over 40 weeks. The trial reported that effects on blood sugar and weight changed with the dose used [1].
What the evidence still cannot tell us
Plenty of big questions are still open. How long do the effects last? Why do they differ from one person to the next? And what happens after someone stops? Results also change depending on which compound was studied and how the study was set up. Because of that, no one can make broad, sweeping claims yet.
